10:53 pm - A few more....
These were taken by our friend, Karen, who gave me my lovely wedding gown. It's rare to see Kyle on the other side of the camera, and I savor every moment we get to share the frame with each other.

I found that most of the time, I was holding the train by its "waltzing" loop, to avoid tearing the 75 year old lace... but in these next two photos, you can see the glorious swoop and elegant line of the ensemble. Claudette Colbert never had it so good!

05:25 pm - May 17, 2009
The day was perfect -- our four witnesses were people who have known and loved us both and the emphasis was on our vow to each other. Karen came over at 2:30 to help me fasten the lovely vintage gown and arrange the roses in my hair and then she cued Kyle to start the victrola. Rudee Vallee sang "As Time Goes By" as I made my way down the stairs and into the parlor where Kyle waited for me with Brad, Nicki Jaine and Mario. Even with just the six of us there, my heart was fluttering with adrenaline.

When I was a child, my grandmother gave me the linen and lace handkerchief she carried on her wedding day in 1937. I washed it by hand and ironed it and carried it with the gorgeous bouquet that Karen gave me from her garden.

Because it was so intimate, we could splurge on the little things, like this bottle of Veuve Cliquot. There's a very good reason you have to ask for it at the liquor store; it's quite simply the best and drinking it makes you feel like you're living in The Great Gatsby.

Here I am, cutting our delectable wedding cake in half with a katana!

Afterwards, we had a lovely barbecue in our garden and listened to the victrola into the wee hours, occasionally trying to keep Hennepin out of the whipped cream... but never quite succeeding.

09:16 pm - Dress fitting
A dress to match the era of our home. Everything is very last minute; I mentioned to our friend Karen yesterday, that we were having an exchange of vows on Sunday, and she said "I have my great aunt's wedding dress that will never fit me. I'd love for you to wear it." And low and behold, it fit like a glove - both inside and out. It's the vintage beauty I wanted all along.

It shall rain on Sunday, but we will light the fire, toast our champagne, and love with all our hearts.

12:59 pm - a thing of beauty and love
Kyle's mother discovered right before Christmas that we were engaged and, because both his parents have welcomed me so wholeheartedly into their family, she offered us her mother's beautiful engagement ring as a gift.

They tied it onto a high branch of their Christmas tree, at Kyle's eye level, and after dinner, after all the gifts were unwrapped on the 24th, Kyle took that final little box down from the tree with a flourish, and presented it to me with kisses and laughter.

It means a great deal to me that Kyle's mother thinks enough of me to want me to wear the ring her much loved mother wore. It's like silver liquid on my hand -- a drop of starlight.

I wear our original engagement ring, the Indian Head coin, on my right hand, because my great great grandmother was a Cherokee Princess.

04:12 pm - We almost did it...
If we'd had everything together and been a little less overwhelmed with business, we would have eloped while in NOLA. In fact, we even did a "trash the dress" shoot with a lovely wedding dress (a la Audrey Hepburn) we found in a vintage shop down there.

Of course, I could always don this lovely satin and lace confection again and trip off to the local speakeasy for a casual affair....

... or opt for more... gothic attire....

10:49 am - wedding plans dashed
The doctors have finally gotten back to us that Trillian's father (Colonel Stars) can't participate in the HALO (Hight Altitude Low Open) sky-diving wedding we'd been planning. It seems the steel plate he has in the back of his head (after the gunfight with the cattle rustlers in '73) might change shape subtly in the extremes of gravity and temperature during the violent re-entry from the LEO (Low Earth Orbit) rocket we'd rented. The steel plate had been rated at 4G's but now the military is getting back to us that the Low Open snap is about 5.5g's.

With our plans dashed like this I'm about an inch from tears.

In other news, the e-ring was appraised at 2.3 million dollars, not the lower amount we were hoping for. This means the insurance payments are going to cut into the reception budget.

All this rehersal for nothing. I don't know what to tell the BM.

01:27 pm - Engagement Rings
Kyle's in Tennessee for some top secret training this weekend, so I took the opportunity to venture down to Antique Row to seek out some unique birthday present for him -- his birthday's on Hallowe'en.  I grabbed my umbrella, hopped on the shuttle bus and emerged at 13th and Market, just in time for a rainy walk to Pine, where all the best antique shops in Philadelphia are.

I always expect Antique Row to be more accessible than it is, but the truth is that most of the shops require an appointment beforehand; one young lady let me in to the first shop grudgingly; I was hoping to find opera glasses or something equally of Edith Wharton's world, but the pickings were slim.

The second shop had an array of 19th century furniture -- nothing under $1,000 -- and so I scratched Zach, the dog's, head and continued down Pine.

The third shop, Provenance, filled with estate jewelry and fine art, was the charm; the proprietor was perfectly willing to chat with me about each item and hold each tray of rings out for me to behold for as long as it took me to consider them... which turned out to be a good long while.  I had just determined to return with Kyle himself, since choosing jewelry for someone else can be problematic, when he said "oh, we also have this unique pinky ring" and presented me with a beautifully set garnet ring from 1910.  A perfect engagement ring for Kyle -- something that says "I love you; I want to spend the rest of my life with you; our love is timeless."

So now, here it is beside me, its gold band engraved with celtic-inspired swirls and a drop of red in the center.

I'm feeling quite satisfied with myself.
